🐟 Hannah Bugas is a Natural Resources Conservation student who worked at the Salmon Habitat Restoration Program (SHaRP) this past summer as a Media and PR Team Lead! Here she developed skills in writing, designing and marketing.

This provided her the opportunity to educate the public while also doing restoration work to improve the salmon habitat. How cool! 🐟

Did you know many butterflies are key pollinators that help produce some of the food we enjoy? However, they are at risk due to climate change. Some of our students choose to do research on how to manage our resources better to adapt to these changes. Comment some ways you are trying to help the fight against climate change!

👈 Chelsea on field duty. "My first co-op position has been in the Tree Ring Lab at UBC as a field/research assistant. In the lab, I have been recording tree ring data and field data to record the frequency and severity of forest fires in western Canada. While in the field, I have been a part of a team that records data surrounding the burn severity and natural regeneration of forests after the 2017 Elephant Hill fire. Our team has also been collaborating with the Bonapart band to identify culturally relevant plant species and monitor resource regeneration in their traditional territory." #ubcforestry #forestrycoop #treeringlab #summerjobs #fieldworklife

"For my second co-op work term I have been working with DWB Consulting Services Ltd. This consulting company has contracts with Canfor, Carrier, West Fraser just to name a few. During this work term I have been learning how to prepare forest blocks for harvest and management operations. Working as a field consultant I have traversed boundary with a GPS unit, outlining the section of forest, by hanging orange ribbon, and making stations every 200 meters. The blocks range in size from as small as 20 to as large as 160 hectares depending on the type of cutting permit granted. I also have learnt how to traverse roads through the block using a climometer and hanging blue ribbon and noting the length at each station. With cruising, a team of two goes into the block and visits randomly determined plots, to gather data such as height, diameter and age of the trees within it. DWB also conducts ecological surveys where they assess the species of trees and vascular plant life present. Also, soil type and BEC zone assessment are included in these surveys. DWB provides the most adequate training, I felt very prepared after going through the two week orientation."⠀

"This summer, I worked on my communication skills and dependability during my time at Horizons Landscaping, and I learned a lot about these skills as well as other helpful skills to use in my future careers. I also learned to be relaxed and easy going, to take things one at a time as to not get overwhelmed, and to make sure I do a good job at each project that comes my way. My job consists of traveling throughout the City of Surrey in a truck with a tank of water, and watering specifically marked trees. We use two different methods of watering, either watering special bags placed around the trunk of the tree to help regulate the water output, or probing the ground and placing water next to the roots, and reporting on the health of the tree."⠀

"For my second work term, I have been working as a research assistant for the Forest Insect Disturbance Ecology Lab at the University of British Columbia. Here, I have been assisting in a variety of projects involving different insect systems, ranging from Douglas-fir beetle and mountain pine beetle systems to the alder bark beetle system. ⠀
⠀
One of the major projects that I have been involved with is a study that attempts to increase understanding of Douglas-fir beetle colonization of a stand after a fire. For this project, I got to go out into burned stands in the Cariboo region of BC and record various stand attributes, such as level of infestation and burn severity. From this, I gained many technical skills that I can use in future forestry jobs, and greatly improved upon my abilities to live and work with a team."⠀ #forestrycoop #ubcforestry #FIDEL #summerjobs #researchlife

👈 Sarah in full lab gear. 👩‍🔬"During my summer work term placement at The Richard Hamelin Lab, I was assisting Kelly Hrywkiw with her PhD research project on sudden oak death (Phytophthora ramorum) inoculation and its potential to infect big leaf maple. This required for me to mostly work at FPInnovations, allowing me to gain different experience from two different labs. When I first started helping with the research, I was tasked with collecting and inoculating big leaf maple leaves, making varying petri dishes, and selecting phytophthora infected samples for PCR barcoding. By inoculating big leaf maple leaves, we were able to make inferences as to what different phytophthora ramorum lineages were capable of. Being so involved with this plant pathogen I have learned a lot about its origins, different lineages, phenotype characteristics, and plant hosts...almost every day at the lab I was doing a different task and had to be prepared for a change in schedule, this could vary from one task needing to take priority due to a change in circumstances, to part of the project not going as expected and having to adjust accordingly." #thehamelinlab #forestrycoop #ubcforestry #summerjobs
